The suburb didn't really exist before 1931. That's when the East Hills line reached it and Bexley North station opened, and the housing that followed still shapes what fails today, right down to the pipes in the ground.

Solid inter-war and post-war double-brick homes fill the streets around Bexley Road and Slade Road, built to last, but never built with modern plumbing loads in mind. Newer unit blocks have gone up nearer the shops and the platform.

A strong Greek and Chinese community has grown up around that same station over the decades, but the pipework under the houses hasn't changed nearly as much as the shopfronts and streets above it.

Storm season adds one more layer to all this. Properties nearer the Bardwell Creek valley catchment can see stormwater pits surcharge in a heavy downpour, on top of everything else already ageing underground.

No hot water overnight is the call we get most in this pocket. Original storage units nobody's got around to replacing tend to fail without any warning at all, usually right when the house needs them, and we carry the parts for a same-day swap.

A pipe finally giving way runs a close second. Ageing galvanised and clay pipework fitted before the Second World War splits under pressure rather than easing off gradually.

It rarely waits for business hours to happen. Most of the time it's the original plumbing that finally gives out, not anything added since, and it tends to happen without much notice.
